Sitting on the bench during a break in the wildlife garden, drinking my coffee from a flask, I noticed this glorious spider's web. 'Hello, where did you come from?' I have wanted to try and paint it but put it off for fear of getting it wrong. The web is so delicate, after all. For sure, that voice again tried to tell me it was rubbish, but, I noticed, was quickly dismissed by a more constructive one. 'Keep going!', it said. It is all practice, all learning.

It doesn't look like it's a high wall to the top of the page. In the photo, it is. Does it matter? Yes, if I'm trying to paint a copy. But I'm not! I've come to like whatever comes out. It could be a row of white silver birches. For those who see that, they are! I have always found something in part of any painting I've done I like.

But these colours are typical of the wildlife garden, where I volunteer. Without realising it, similar colours turned up again. I love them! Referring to a swatch I'd made, it reminded me that hooker green and bright aqua green make a brilliant yellow (with a bit of titanium white, of course). I could have made the web finer. Is the plane of the web too straight on..? Food for thought. I'm learning. It was also a very enjoyable, relaxing experience. I looked at the clock. Where had the time gone?

A friend commented that I did try hard subjects. That was a good reason for putting off the subject. But I told myself what if it's not hard. What if it's easy? I'll only find out if I start painting.
